AGRIRESEARCH UNGUKA Ltd is excited to announce a strategic partnership with the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) in a bold step towards advancing Rwanda's vision for sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. This partnership is established through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening collaboration in agricultural research and innovation through the Agricultural Green Research and Innovation Park Initiative (AGRIPI).
Why AGRIPI?
The Agricultural Green Research and Innovation Park Initiative (AGRIPI) is a research and innovation center, the first-of-its-kind in Rwanda, launched by AGRIRESEARCH UNGUKA Ltd to advance regenerative agriculture and eco-friendly post-harvest technologies through evidence-based research, technology innovation, and capacity building for farmers. AGRIPI has three primary programs: Research and Development, Farmer Training and Education, and Green Agribusiness Incubation Program.
With a strong focus on climate-smart solutions and enhancing food security, AGRIPI serves as a “living laboratory and a national food basket hub” where researchers, farmers, and innovators collaborate to develop and scale sustainable agricultural practices that align with Rwanda’s national strategy.
- Advance research and innovation in regenerative agriculture and climate-resilient farming systems, leveraging AGRIPI as a platform for evidence generation and practical application.
- Strengthen knowledge transfer and capacity building by equipping farmers, agripreneurs, and researchers with cutting-edge, science-backed agricultural practices.
- Test, validate, and promote innovative technologies that address key agricultural challenges while supporting Rwanda’s national strategies for sustainable food systems.
- Pioneering Joint Research with the University of Rwanda: AGRIPI has been conducting a groundbreaking study in collaboration with the University of Rwanda on the effects of regenerative agriculture (RA) practices on maize, beans, and Irish potatoes in Rwanda’s context. The research has yielded valuable preliminary data, with well-established composite sites and field trials, providing critical insights into soil health and productivity improvements.
- Empowering Farmers, Including Youth, in Regenerative Agriculture: AGRIPI has successfully trained and equipped 346 farmers with practical skills in RA practices, fostering widespread adoption of sustainable farming techniques that enhance soil fertility, increase crop yields, and improve resilience to climate change.
- Launching the Green Agribusiness Incubation Program (2024): Recognizing the importance of youth in agriculture, AGRIPI initiated this program in 2024, successfully incubating a cohort of 7 young innovators who have since graduated. These promising entrepreneurs have officially registered Gwiza Initiative Ltd, a company now operating in Gasabo, Kinyinya, specializing in high-quality compost and organic mulch production. With 10.5 million Rwf in seed capital, they are already driving tangible impact in Rwanda’s organic agriculture landscape.
